Until those families have rebuilt their lives, United Way’s job isn't over. And the recent oil spill has only made the situation throughout the Gulf Coast worse. About Post-Katrina New Orleans
- Today, New Orleans only has 89 percent of its pre-Katrina population.
- Only 70 percent of the jobs based in New Orleans pre-Katrina exist today.
- The cost of rental property in New Orleans increased by 49 percent since Katrina.
- Pre-Katrina, New Orleans had seventeen hospitals with emergency rooms. Today it has eleven.

The mission of the St. Bernard Project is to create housing opportunities so that Hurricane Katrina survivors can return to their homes and communities. The St. Bernard Project, a nonprofit, community-based organization carries out its mission through three primary programs: Rebuilding Program, Center for Wellness and Mental Health and Senior Housing Program.
